The basic steps to get the power back on
- Your first mission is, as we said, to reach the home electrical panel safe and sound. Ideally, you should have some emergency light to hand, such as candles, a torch or your mobile phone, or be lucky enough for some light from the landing or the street to come in when you open the front door.
- Once you get there, the first thing you need to do is check that the residual current device has not tripped and that the switches are up.
- Then, unplug a nearby appliance, especially if you suspect high appliance electricity usage, and turn off the main power switch.
- Once you have done this, wait 3 seconds and turn the main power switch back on. Voila! If everything has gone as it should, the electricity supply will be restored.
Electric blackout: what to do if power goes out
Put like that, it may sound a bit strange. We know. But even though an electric blackout disrupts our comfort and tests our patience until everything goes back to normal, it does serve a safety purpose.
If many nearby homes consume more electricity than they have contracted at the same time, demand is created that the electrical installation is not prepared for. Electricity meters are designed to prevent general blackouts by cutting the supply only in some homes before demand becomes unsustainable for the installation. The warning device is the ICP, or power control switch ICP, which trips in the same way that old fuse boxes used to trip.
In addition, there are also power limiter device options with automatic reset that can reset digital electricity meter systems on their own, although they must be purchased separately.
