Which electricity distributor covers my area?
The electricity distributor is one of the most important players in the electricity sector. Discover its responsibilities and find out which company supplies your electricity, or which electricity provider operates in your area!
If you have ever had to register a new supply point (that is, activate the electricity service in an installation that had been disconnected or had never had electricity) you will have come across this question: which distributor covers my area? As we always want to help you understand everything related to your electricity, from the most general to the most specific, today we are going to answer this question in depth, starting by putting it into context.
What is a distributor and what are its responsibilities?
As we have explained before, two types of electricity companies are involved in bringing electricity to your home, and they don’t necessarily have to belong to the same group: the distributor and the electricity retailer.
Distribution companies are responsible for delivering low-voltage electricity to a specific area. They own and are responsible for the electricity grid, our installation and, if we own it (which is the most common situation) also the meter.
Their main responsibilities are:
- Maintaining medium- and low-voltage networks.
- Guaranteeing the quality of the electricity supply.
- Fixing faults (in general, they are only responsible for those that originate outside the affected home or premises).
- Maintaining measurement equipment (meters and maximeters) that are rented.
- Reading the meters and providing the readings to each electricity user’s retailer (currently, every two months).
- Carrying out supply registrations and cancellations, changes of account holder and changes of power capacity or tariff at the customer’s request, which the customer in turn submits to the electricity retailer.
The main difference between an electricity retailer and a distributor lies in their roles. The electricity retailer is the company that provides the service, bills you for it, and can be chosen by you, while the distributor is assigned according to your area. In addition, electricity distributors are responsible for ensuring that the grid is kept in proper condition.
If you want to find out more about one and the other, you can do so here.
Main distributors by area and how to contact them
As with electricity retailers, we can find large distributors: those belonging to the five major groups that control the electricity market, and the so-called independent distributors.
On this map of electricity distributors in Spain, you can locate the areas covered by the incumbent companies, although you should bear in mind that your distribution area may not belong to any of them, but rather to an independent distributor. In that case, it is important to know who is responsible for electricity distribution in your area, so you can contact them if needed.
If you want to register that new supply point with Holaluz as your electricity retailer, but you do not know the CUPS, which is the code that identifies your supply, you can contact the distributor in your area to ask them for it. These are the phone numbers of the five main distributors:
- Endesa Distribución: 900 878 119
- Iberdrola Distribución: 900 171 171
- Gas Natural Fenosa Distribución: 900 111 999 / 900 111 444
- Grupo EDP Distribución (Hidrocantábrico): 900 907 003
- Repsol Distribución: 900 118 866
If the distributor assigned to your area cannot provide it to you, it may be because you have an independent distributor or because there has never been electricity at that point and a new file needs to be opened. In any case, you can contact us and we will do everything we can to find it. If you have an old bill or have been able to locate the CUPS in some other way, you simply need to look at the first four numbers after the country code (ES). These are the codes of the five major distributors:
- 0031 – Endesa
- 0021 – Iberdrola
- 0022 – Gas Natural Fenosa
- 0026 – Grupo EDP Distribución (Hidrocantábrico)
- 0027 / 0033 – Repsol Distribución
If your CUPS does not start with any of these codes, your installation belongs to an independent distributor. In this other article, we explain what this means and how we handle it if you want HolaLuz.com to be your electricity retailer.
Other than that, no matter who your electricity distributor is, we will act as the intermediary between you and them, whether you need to make any changes to your contract (power capacity, tariff, etc.) or report a fault.
And that is just a small part of everything we can do for you :)Discover our 100% green tariffs
