How much does it cost to connect and install natural gas at home?

Connecting natural gas at home means activating the supply so you can use it for heating, hot water or cooking. However, the process is not always the same: reactivating an existing supply is different from installing natural gas from scratch in a home with no existing infrastructure.

Before getting started, it is therefore worth checking whether natural gas can be installed in your home, what steps you need to follow, what costs may arise and what documents you will need.

What does connecting gas mean?

Connecting gas means activating the natural gas supply to a home. This may be necessary in several situations: a new home that has never had gas, a property where the supply was disconnected, or a home switching to natural gas from another fuel.

It is important to distinguish between:

  • activating an existing supply point when the home already has an installation.
  • installing a complete natural gas system when no infrastructure is in place.

In the first case, the process is usually simpler. In the second, an installation must be completed before you can sign a contract and activate the supply.

How much does it cost to connect gas?

The cost of connecting gas is not fixed, as it depends on the autonomous community, expected consumption and whether connection charges are payable.

As a guide, connecting a domestic gas supply can cost approximately €150–€300 in many cases, although the amount may be higher depending on the access tariff and the autonomous community.

The cost mainly consists of:

  •  Connection charges: for domestic consumption of up to 15,000 kWh per year, the reference amount is €106.34. For consumption between 15,000 and 50,000 kWh per year, it rises to €244.40.
  • Activation charges: these depend on the autonomous community and the access tariff assigned to the supply .

For example, in Catalonia, the combined activation and connection charges may be around €151 for domestic RL.1 and RL.2 tariffs, while for an RL.3 supply they may be approximately €265.

These amounts cover connecting the supply and do not include the cost of installing a new gas system in the home.

How much does it cost to install natural gas at home?

If the home does not have a gas installation, the cost will be considerably higher because you will need to add the internal installation and, depending on the situation, a boiler, radiators and any other necessary work.

As a rough guide, installing natural gas in a home may cost around €2,000–€3,000 if the price includes the installation and a boiler. If a complete heating system with radiators is also needed, the total may reach approximately €6,000.

In an apartment in a building that already has a shared gas installation, the cost may be lower. As a guide, an individual gas installation may cost around €600, plus any equipment you want to install, such as a boiler or radiators.

These are indicative market prices and can vary considerably depending on the home, location, length of piping, equipment selected and installer. It is therefore best to request a personalised quote.

Can natural gas be installed in any home?

Not always. Before installing natural gas at home, you must first check whether the gas network reaches the area and whether the property can technically be connected to it.

In an apartment, check whether the building already has a shared gas installation. If it does, the process is usually simpler. If not, a shared installation may need to be considered, which normally involves permits, building work and approval from the owners’ association.

For a detached house, feasibility depends on whether the distribution network runs nearby, the distance to the connection point and the technical requirements of the internal installation.

Before requesting connection, check whether a gas network is available, whether the home already has an installation, whether indoor building work is needed and whether the installation can meet safety requirements.

What if your home does not have a gas installation?

If your home does not already have a gas installation, the necessary work must be completed before the supply can be connected, so the property can be linked to the network and use gas safely.

This may include the connection point, internal pipes, shut-off valves, meter and connections to appliances such as the boiler, cooker or water heater.

This work must be carried out by an authorised installation company, which will issue the relevant certificate when the work is complete. This document is essential so the distribution company can inspect the installation and activate the supply.

How does the connection process work, step by step?

The process for requesting a natural gas connection usually involves these steps:

  1. Check whether gas can be installed or activated. If the home already has an installation, make sure it is in good condition. If not, first check whether the natural gas network reaches the property.
  2. Prepare or inspect the installation. If a new installation is needed, it must be carried out by an authorised company.
  3. Choose an energy supplier. Compare tariffs and choose the option that best suits your consumption.
  4. Request the connection. The supplier will process the request with the distribution company in your area.
  5. Inspection by the distribution company. A technician checks that the installation meets the requirements.
  6. Supply activation. If everything is in order, the gas is activated and the relevant charges are included on the first bill.

What to check before requesting a quote

If you need a new installation, do not focus only on the final price. To compare quotes properly, check whether they include:

  • internal gas installation
  • pipes, valves, ventilation and connections
  • installation certificate
  • commissioning arrangements
  • meter or installation preparation
  • boiler, radiators or other equipment
  • timeframes, warranties and authorised labour

This will help you avoid significant differences between quotes and understand whether the price covers only the gas installation or also the heating system, boiler or radiators.
